Four years later, Aaron Wall and Andy Hagans published 101 link building tips to market your website, which was inspired by the other article. Considering the furiously changing face of search engine marketing and with 2009 already ahead of us, I thought it was time to evaluate both lists and create an updated collection of link building strategies.

7 Internal link building strategies
1. Make sure that your navigation is spiderable. Either use (anchor text carrying) text based navigation, or an image based navigation with relevant alt attributes attached to each image link.

2. Breadcrumbs are a great internal linking tool. Use them for usability and anchor text differentiation.

3. In-content links not only tend to have a higher click through rate and perceived trust, but are also able to add more relevance to a link because of the surrounding text.

4. Use a sitemap. A good sitemap is useful for visitors, useful for search engines and, therefore, useful for you.

5. Link to topically relevant pages on important pages of your website. Link to important pages on every (or most) topically relevant page of your website.

6. Be consistent in linking behavior. If you link to homepage.com, always link to homepage.com, and not to homepage.com, homepage.com/index.php and homepage.com/index.php&id=123.

7. Identify your most linked-to pages, and make sure that the link juice flows to your most important pages from there, in a well-optimized way.

10 Easy link building starters
8. Optimize your existing links. Contact the webmasters of prominent websites that link to you and ask them to change ‘click here’ to an anchor text that contains relevant keywords, an anchor text that encourages clicking through, or -ideally- a combination of both.

9. Monitor your 404 statistics. Keep track of whoever links to old pages or misspelled URLs, which is data that Google provides as well. Contact those webmasters and provide them a good URL which they can link to.

10. Create a ‘link to us’ page, where you provide information about how people can link to you and which URL(s), logo and/ or anchor text they can use. Update this page regularly in order to diversify the anchor text.

11. Contact family, friends, colleagues and other people you know and let them know about your website. Some will send you useful feedback, others -who happen to have a website of their own- might link to you.

12. Do you block search engine bots from indexing certain parts of your website via robots.txt or meta-noindex? Find out if people link to this section of your site. If so, contact the webmasters of these sites and kindly ask them to link to an other page of your website.

13. Use your spell check. People will more likely link to correctly spelled articles than to content that’s full of grammatical errors.

14. Search for websites that already mention your business name or URL, but haven’t linked to your website. This works excellently in Yahoo!.

15. Look for websites that mention your personal name, but currently don’t link to your site. Use Yahoo! for this as well.

16. Leave comments on the blogs you visit every day. Hey, you’re visiting them anyway, so why don’t leave a (relevant, useful!) comment?

17. Find out which website your company owns. If you work for a small company, there may possibly be several. If you work for a large company, the number will probably knock you off your shoes. Link these websites (carefully!) together, or redirect the most important and/ or relevant ones to your main website.

12 Old school link building techniques
18. Search for related websites by using relevant keywords. Filter out all interesting websites and contact them. When you did this for your main keyword(s), there are still tons of other combinations possible.

19. Check which websites link to your competitors. Try to get them to link to your website as well.

20. Check which types of websites link to websites that offer the same services or products as you, but in a different country/ language. This might result in a “I never thought of that…” feeling.

21. Either interview an expert from your field, or try to get interviewed by someone else. Don’t forget to mention your best content: readers of the interview might be willing to link to it.

22. Write guest posts for relevant websites in your niche. You could also write posts about your industry for websites that are slightly related to your niche.

23. Teach. Whether it’s a public workshop (local press), a class at a local college or University (.edu website) or at a business related event (industry links), teaching can result in authority links.

24. Use any search engine advertising program and advertise on keywords that linkerati might use. Try to convert the targeted traffic into links.

25. Use Google AdWords’ content network to determine which (relevant) websites generate traffic and conversions. Contact those websites directly.

26. Join an affiliate program. See #25.

27. Determine who’s linked to you before. Contact them again when you’re releasing an interesting new piece of content.

28. Trade links. There’s nothing wrong, with swapping links with a few, highly relevant, authority websites that can bring in extra traffic. Exchanging links with lots of irrelevant websites, however, might get you in trouble.

29. Donate to a charity. Although buying links is not allowed by Google, there are still lots of ways you can buy links (kind of) legitimately.

12 Places to submit your URL to
30. Most social media websites are only useful for promoting good content (which will get you links in return), but sites like LinkedIn still provide dofollow links with an anchor text of your choice.

31. Some general directories, such as DMOZ, the Yahoo Directory and Best of the Web are still worth submitting your website to. Make sure to submit your site to the most appropriate category.

32. High quality, niche directories can be worth considering as well. Notice the emphasis on high quality.

33. Don’t forget to submit your website to high quality, regional directories. Especially worthwhile for websites that target local markets.

34. Publish stunning, interesting, funny or beautiful images in your Flickr account, that contains a link to your website.

35. Writing an article about a relevant topic, that contains one or more links to your website, and submitting it to article directories such as eZineArticles might work for you.

36. Relevant, non-spammy links in Wikipedia articles, Yahoo! Answers or Google Groups may have nofollow attributes attached, but can lead to (dofollow) links indirectly.

37. Submit your RSS feed to important RSS directories.

38. Blog directories may be willing to link to your blog. Submit your blog to the high quality ones.

39. Use PR websites to distribute your press releases, in addition to your PR agency. Make sure that your press release contains one or more (clickable) links to your website.

40. Got a great design? Submit your site to CSS directories and/ or website design contests. Even well-designed parts of your website can result in links.

41. Twitter. Just published a new post or article? Mention it on Twitter, your followers might visit it and -if they find it interesting- link to it.

12 Ways to make people write about you
42. Send out christmas gifts or birthday gifts to bloggers (or website owners) you know.

43. Offer services or a product in exchange for a review. Don’t ask the bloggers or webmasters to link to you, they most often will do anyway.

44. Create something unique. Top 10s, top 250s, mash-ups, how-tos, best-ofs, surveys, studies, awards. Define the proper hook, create unique content and attract good links. The possibilities are infinite.

45. Try to start a hype, use a new word, get a meme going, or do something else you’re the first at.

46. Link to others. People -especially bloggers- will notice it if you link to them. If you do this several times and offer content that is or might be relevant to these bloggers, they might link to you as well eventually.

47. If you happen to have some breaking news, offer a blogger (or a select group) the scoop. Bloggers love to publish scoops.

48. Say something groundbreaking, shocking, confronting, stupid, weird or flattering. People tend to link to others who are different or act that way.

49. Create something with an amazing design. This does not necessarily have to be your website, just having an awesome business card can result in extra links.

50. Launch an extraordinary offline campaign. People will talk about this online. If you integrate this offline campaign with an online version in a perfect way, you may even receive some extra links from ‘this is how you should integrate offline and online’-articles as well.

51. Create a contest and offer give-aways for winners. This is not only a great way to get attention, but to get valuable input as well, for example when hosting a guest post contest.

52. Build useful tools and/ or plugins that are free to use.

53. Speak at an industry conference. You’ll meet lots of interesting new people, and will probably get mentioned in several conference write-ups.

12 Common business tactics
54. Add a link to your local Chamber of Commerce profile.

55. The Better Business Bureau, and any industry related association you’re a member of are interesting link targets as well.

56. Contact your (preferred) suppliers, manufacturers, other partners. Obtain links from these website if they have a partners page as well.

57. Offer to write testimonials or a quote to your suppliers, if they are willing to link back to your site in or near this testimonial.

58. Ask clients to write testimonials about your product or service that they publish on their website, in exchange for a discount, extra fast delivery or any other benefit you can provide.

59. Hire a publicist. Press agency employees usually know the right people in the right places, which can result in a higher acceptancy rate of your press release.

60. Join relevant forums. You can either link to your website on your profile page, in your signature or in your posts. Notice how this one is listed under ‘Business related tactics’ in stead of ‘Places to submit your URL to’? There’s a reason why: forums are not places to drop links, but to join discussions.

61. Sponsor something. There are tons of possibilities, such as an industry conference, a sports club, a relevant forum, a local happening, or just any offline event that happens to have a website.

62. Hire an intern. You can let him or her work on a piece of research, which you can in your link building process. Also, don’t forget the website of the University you’re intern is attending.

63. Offer awesome product or services. People love talking about great stuff they’ve bought. If your products are ‘just’ good in stead of awesome, make sure that your after sales or customer care is excellent. People love talking about companies with a great service as well. Of course, offering crappy products or a lousy service will also result in links, but I don’t think those are the links you’re after.

64. Look for companies that went out of business. Either acquire their website, or contact the website that they’re currently getting links from and ask these sites to link to you in stead.

65. Turn your colleagues into link developers. Each of them has his or her own specialty and group of contacts. This not only take works off of your hands, but is very efficient as well.

4 Important considerations
66. Hire a link builder or an expert. Either let somebody you trust manage (a part of) your campaign, or visit a link building workshop. Especially when you’ve been building links for your own site for several years, a fresh mind can bring new ideas.

67. Hang in there. Link building isn’t something you can do in just a few hours, or something that you only have to do during one week in a year. Building a brand can’t be done in a single day, the same goes for a solid link profile. It’s a continuing process that takes time. Lots of time.

68. Keep an eye on the news. Follow important and interesting different blogs, in order to keep up with the latest news, trends and tricks. I’m not just talking about link building or SEM blogs, but make sure to follow general marketing blogs, slightly different, creative blogs or industry related news websites as well.

69. If you have to ask yourself ‘is this a legitimate approach’ or ’should I be doing this’, the answer is probably no. Too much, too aggressive or too shady isn’t advisable. Don’t do things you would be ashamed of when explaining them to your mother. Or Matt Cutts.

0 Advanced link building strategies
There is no such thing as advanced link building. While this list already sums up quite a few different strategies, I’m pretty sure that you can easily come up with a dozen more, that are specifically suitable for your company or industry.

Eric Ward once said that link building is “one part marketing, two parts public relations, and three parts common sense”. I’d say that link building is 10% basic SEO knowledge, 20% business thinking, 30% creativity and 40% perseverance. Either way, there’s nothing advanced to it.
Chandruhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17148967918500613826noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-22045594.post-66434245584200912732009-01-31T13:02:00.002+05:302009-01-31T13:05:44.250+05:30Do Follow Social Book Marking SitesSocial Bookmarking is a nice way to get some “additional” Google juice (and traffic), particularly when you have a lot of backlinks and need that little bit of extra numbers.

Here are 60 social bookmarking sites that have dofollow links and do pass some Google juice one way or the other to the listed sites. Launched December last year, the OmniFind enterprise search engine which is a free application has been downloaded 25,000 times in a span of one year. Hence, it’s about time that IBM and Yahoo releases a new version with added functionalities and important improvements.

The new version of OmniFind Yahoo Edition (ver.8.4.2) boosts of new features which includes multiple collections, custom extensible meta-date fields, and result click through tracking.
Multiple collections let users configure up to 5 different collections of documents that can be independently searched. You can partition your data for search using these collections however you’d like.

Another new feature of OmniFind Yahoo Edition is the custom extensible meta-data fields. This allows you to define your own fields in the index and populate these fields with HTML meta tags. You can then extract document meta-data or directly through the push API and then search your custom fields. This feature has been the subject of hackers and so IBM decided to build the feature to prevent hackers from breaking into code of OmniFind.

Lastly, OmniFind Yahoo Edition now enables more powerful reporting capabilities. Two additional reports that tell users what the most clicked search result is and what searches most often result in no clicks have been added. This feature is very useful as it tells that search results with no click means that the users don’t have the content that searchers are looking for.
Additionally, the new version of OmniFind has also resolved reported bugs in the previous version.Chandruhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17148967918500613826noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-22045594.post-32463649526995819982007-11-21T11:18:00.000+05:302007-11-21T11:25:04.381+05:30Social madia manualSo many questions from people about Digg, Propeller, Reddit, Stumbleupon and other social news sites every day, that I decided to write this little "manual" as something to read before you jump in head first into any social site, and to keep by your side as you progress through the ranks. It should not only help you succeed with your social media marketing efforts, but also help you avoid some of the mistakes I've made.

1. Before you even think about signing up with a socially driven news site, consider this: Have you spent some time browsing the community (reading the content and the comments, learning about popular sources and players)? Do you understand how the site works and the niche it serves? If so, is the site for you?
While all socially driven sites have the same basic elements (reading, submitting, voting, and commenting) not all of them function the same way and they definitely don't serve the same niche (remember it is not a zero-sum game, and it is with good reason that so many socially driven sites have managed to not only co-exist but also grow at the same time). If you don't invest time in determining whether a site is right for you from the start, all your subsequent hard work likely won't pay off and you will have to switch to a different community at a future date.
2. Before you click the sign up button, consider this: You've looked at the site and determined that you would be a good fit among the other community members, but have you thought about your goals? Why do you want to sign up with the site and what will you accomplish by doing so?
Too many people look at the popularity of a Digg or a StumbleUpon and they think that they absolutely have to sign up for them to succeed. But if you plan on using a site strictly to promote your site or content, or that of your clients, don't sign up because the social web is certainly not for you. You might be able to call in enough favors or spam enough people to get a few stories popular at first, but you're going to lose in the long-run. The community will soon get sick of your constant spamming and singular purpose for being on the site and will either start ignoring you or call you out as a shill. Furthermore, and contrary to general assumptions, these sites have very robust systems in place that can over time detect unnatural participation activity and penalize it.
3. Consider the needs of other users. Sure, it's a "social" news site and every community member is supposed to share content he or she finds interesting, but don't forget that you also have to take into account the interests of the masses.
A singular opinion that has no crowd-backing will never be successful on a social news site. For example, if you want to share pictures of cute puppies and you're participating in a technology-focused or politics-focused site, you shouldn't expect to be too popular (though I bet there's a site out there for waiting for you). On the other hand, if your interests are HDR photography, supercomputers, hot models, and Ron Paul, than you're just the social media everyman the community needs. Keep your interests in mind, but judge them within the context of the community's interests.
4. Assuming you have an intention of participating in the long run, don't engage in any troll-like behavior (i.e. unnecessarily burying, sinking, down-voting/thumbing of content, posting negative or otherwise superfluous comments or spamming the threads, flaming other users for any reason, and so on).
5. Once you're an 'active' user, you have bigger responsibilities. To make sure you don't make a fool of yourself, start from the bottom and work your way up.
In the beginning, try to read as much "popular" content as you can, to get an idea of what kind of content people want shared with them (and vote on this content based on your opinions). Follow that by posting comments on these stories, making sure that you are being objective in your commentary. Subjective commentary can be interpreted as a personal attack or excessive fanboyism (depending on the slant), neither of which is good. Only post comments if you have something substantive to say, and don't try to use comments to drive traffic to yourself or otherwise hijack a comment thread.
Once you're completely comfortable with the site and understand the community dynamic, you're ready to start hunting and submitting stories you think other people will enjoy, and start sharing them with others.
6. Try to submit and share in moderation. Start slow and slowly ramp it up (but not to the point that you're taking opportunities away from other people). Always start with sources that are already popular with the community so that you can minimize errors in judgement and accidental submissions from less-respected sources.
Even when you try to stick to the basics, not every story you submit will be popular (nor should it). Furthermore, while it is okay to share a story that you've submitted with your friends by using on-site or off-site communication methods, if you over do it, you will start losing friends fast. No one wants to read every single story you submit (so please only share your best picks of the week). In fact, unless you're gaming the system, or were instrumental in programming a site's content promotion algorithm, you will start by failing more than succeeding. Don't let this get you down—it's natural. Over time, if you're sufficiently social with other users (i.e. reading, voting, commenting, and making friends) your profile and your submissions will gain more visibility.
7. Once your profile is visible and you've had some successes, you'll have a small group of users taking note of your submissions and voting/commenting on them. You are developing a following but beware: These friends can be fickle if you don't reciprocate.
Befriend these like-minded community members that enjoy your content, and thank them for keeping an eye out for you. These are the people you should be networking with. It's called social media for a reason; no one can do it alone. You need to make friends along the way to help give you that extra push. Make sure that you check out the content that these users are sharing and give it at least as much time as they're giving your content. Nobody wants to be in a one-sided relationship, and everybody can learn something from a friend.
8. Once you become popular, remember that a social news site is not your personal playground and the content promotion algorithm is not your friend (in fact, in some cases its your worst enemy). Don't expect every story to be universally-loved and promoted and don't whine about the algorithm being specifically unfair to you. Don't assume that the rules are different for you and don't take your success for granted. After all, you may have a good eye for content but keep in mind the people that help you along. Specifically the content producer who wrote, published, and hosts the content, and all the social news site's users that looked at the content, read it, voted on it, and commented on it.
I started participating in the social news sphere in late 2005, when it was still being referred to as social bookmarking (i.e. the jump from del.icio.us to Digg hadn't been made and the differences between the two models were yet to become completely clear). Furthermore, as a result of the nascent stages in which the social web was at that time, most of the points covered here are things that I didn't have the opportunity to take advantage of (since no one had thought about writing them up). That said, this is a great opportunity for you to learn from my mistakes and excel at social news. I would suggest bookmarking this 'manual' for future reference and sharing it with friends who might be interested in participating in the social news sphere.Chandruhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17148967918500613826noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-22045594.post-58311271528075338992007-08-24T16:03:00.000+05:302007-08-24T16:07:22.661+05:30Search Camp in ChennaiSearch Camp is a two day event aimed to bring together the best minds from the Search Engine Marketing space to talk about Search engine advertising, including optimization and marketing issues. The overall co-ordination is being done by The Knowledge Foundation, the same group behind events such as Barcamp Chennai, Blogcamp, WikiCamp.in and Proto.in.

The event is scheduled for the 6th & 7th of October 2007, and the venue is at the Main Auditorium, Tidel Park, Chennai

To Participate in this camp, please visit Searchcamp.inSeo Srinihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11286201724485809100noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-22045594.post-1166786801457006172006-12-22T16:54:00.000+05:302006-12-22T16:56:41.860+05:30Common Mistake of SEO and Inernet marketing FreshersMistake 1. Thinking the same as the rest of the crowd.
Learn to reach beyond traditional “keyword research” and practice building your behavioral research skills. The biggest obstacle is usually our own minds and the fact that our head is already full of keywords that we may think are good words. But with a little practice, you’ll find a whole new way of researching your ideal buying audiences search behavior.
Remember that performing excellent keyword/behavioral research up front, allows for excellent traffic even with only the mildest optimization.

Mistake 2. New students sometimes tend to over-use their keyword phrase.
Many new students would do much better if they were to back off on how often they are using their keyword phrase. Sometimes they tend to over-use single words that are part of the whole phrase, but if they are relying on some tool to advise them on keyword density and prominence but they’d be better to just shut the tool off. Then back off on the over use of single words and use “synonyms” of those words instead.

Mistake 3. Not focusing on creating high-value content.
The use of artificial intelligence is making it more and more important to create Web sites that are well-written both contextually and grammatically as well. It’s far better to create a Web page that contains quality content and has some value to the visitor. Create a page that delivers true value to your readers and deserves to be ranked in top spot.

Mistake 4. Sitting for too long on their most recent research.
The most important aspect, is that the student needs to get started right away, as soon as possible. Far too many people short change themselves by sitting on their research far too long. The sooner you get busy and start optimizing your pages, the sooner you will attain that all important comfort level and know that you can get the results you need.
Don’t spend hundreds of hours doing research or fiddling with code when you could be creating fresh, original, content that will stand the test of time in the rankings.

Mistake 5. Being afraid to research new market places and test out ideas.
Test all of your ideas and spread them all throughout your Web site.
It’s extremely important to test out all of your ideas and see how well you do. We are often our own worst enemies when it comes down to trying new things. If people would just take the time to do more testing, it is amazing what new things you will discover. Optimizing your pages for a single focus (one researched keyword phrase per page) will render much greater activity that trying to optimize a page for several different topics that break up your focus.Chandruhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17148967918500613826noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-22045594.post-1165558668125620272006-12-08T11:47:00.000+05:302006-12-08T11:47:51.246+05:30Age of Search Engines1993 Aliweb Launch
1994 WebCrawler Launch
1994 Lycos Launch
1995 AltaVista Launch (part of DEC)
1995 Excite Launch
1996 Inktomi Founded
1996 Ask Jeeves Founded
1997 Northern Light Launch
1998 Google Launch
1999 AlltheWeb Launch
2000 Teoma Founded
2004 Yahoo! It must be fascinating figuring out how this search tool could direct you to several websites that are relevant to your keywords. Or, have you experienced instances where the link that supposedly contains your keywords is not exactly what you have in mind? You would probably think that there must be something wrong with the search engine that it generated irrelevant results.

How does a search engine work?
Two things figure greatly in making search engines work effectively and efficiently: the electronic search spider and the sitemap.

What is a sitemap?
A sitemap is basically a page or pages that serve/s as a directory by listing all the links to all documents and files found in a website. It is not merely a random listing of links, but organized in such a way that it gives the web user an idea of how all the information that can be found in the site fits into an outline or framework. It is like viewing the table of contents of a book, or viewing the “concept map” of the site’s content.

What is a spider?
In SEO language, spider is not an animal found in your closet. This electronic search spider is actually a bot which collects data and copies content to be stored in the search engine’s database when keywords are fed into the search dialogue box. The spider reads the content of the site and sends another bot to follow the links and copy the content contained in them.

What purpose does a sitemap serve?
A sitemap like any other map gives directions to a navigator. It primarily targets search engine spiders so that they are properly directed to your site and to the links where keywords entered in the search dialogue appears. As such, it is actually a useful tool in search engine optimization. A well organized site map would guide the spider to find the information it needs when keywords are entered during a search operation.

As an additional beneficial consequence, sitemaps have proven to be useful even to web users. Since a sitemap displays all the links to information found in a website, it helps the user to search for a particular topic in mind. Many users also use the sitemap to navigate between pages in a site.

What are the benefits of having a sitemap for my website?
1.No page would be left unturned
Going back to the purpose of sitemaps, having one would mean faster and easier tracking and crawling of spiders all over your site. As a result, search engines would surely get to the view all the pages of your site and not just the pages containing random keywords.

2.Easier navigation for site visitors
Once a web user has accessed your sitemap, they need not go back to the search engine page to look for what they need. If what they are looking for is in your site, then they would have an easier and faster way of locating it.

3.Potential advertising value
If it so happens that a relevant product or service company reaches your site, then it would be easier for them to see how best they can position themselves in the different pages of your site as a paid page advertisement.

4.Encourage greater traffic to your site
If your company website has a sitemap then potential buyers would have an easier time in accessing your latest products and services. Moreover, they would not miss out on any product that might be off future interest to them since the sitemap would display all information found the site.

How are sitemaps formatted?
There are at least three major types of sitemaps: indexed, full categorical, and restricted categorical. An indexed site map appears as an alphabetical listing or directory.

A full categorical map displays all links classified into categories; while a restricted categorical sitemap displays all links listed in a chosen category at a time. The full and restricted sitemaps are very similar except that the former displays all links in all categories all at once in a page, while the latter focuses only the links under the selected category for easier and less eye-straining viewing.
The most widely used format is the full categorical. Based on the results of a 1999 SURL study on sitemap designs, the full categorical format is most preferred by users since it is easier to search for topics within the site and it allows easier comparison between and among categories.

Some tips in setting up your sitemap

1.Link the sitemap only to your homepage.
This is to ensure that the spider starts searching from your homepage down to all the pages listed in your sitemap. In this way, no page would be left unvisited by the spider.

2.Do not go beyond 30 pages for a sitemap.
Large websites having 50 or more pages should not go beyond 30 since this adds more pages to the site, and might make search engines think that the sitemap is a link farm. Also, this prevents overcrowding of links which could be tiring to view.

3.Check all the links listed in your sitemap.
It can be discouraging when you click on a link only to find out that nothing is displayed. Test your sitemap; click all links in every page to make sure that all links are indeed linked to the right page.

4.Give keyword-rich titles to sitemap links.
Keyword-rich titles give your site more advantage in being searched properly under the right category. But be sure to have this sitemap link linked back to the sitemap (e.g. back to sitemap).

5.Provide a short description for the links in the sitemap.
Doing so would give readers a better idea of what to find in the link and save them time on surfing.

6.Be consistent in designing your sitemap with the other pages of the site.
Employ a recurring design and the same HTML template for all pages to establish identity and build character to your website.
Now that you have learned basic things about sitemaps, maybe it is time for you to build one for your site.Chandruhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17148967918500613826noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-22045594.post-1160027382739012122006-10-05T11:16:00.000+05:302006-10-05T11:19:43.083+05:30Groundbreaking Ecommerce Software Released by Top 15 Search Engine Optimization Firm“PrimeCart is the only ecommerce software of which we are aware that was created specifically for search engines by a top ranked search engine optimization firm," commented Matt Foster, President of ArteWorks Business Class. "PrimeCart solves the problem of search engine invisibility that most ecommerce platforms face. We are confident that this is the most search engine friendly shopping cart software available on the market today."

"ArteWorks Business Class has demonstrated that it is a leader in its field, showing superior service levels and performance for their clients," commented Bill Peden of TopSEOs.com. "ArteWorks Business Class is a standout amongst the many Internet marketing vendors in the $5 billion plus search marketing industry."

PrimeCart is affordable to small business, with pricing beginning at only $59.00 per month, yet powerful enough for enterprise. It is loaded with search engine features such as static url's, dynamically generated Google sitemaps and Froogle feeds, individual product page optimization, and eliminates problematic session id's and dynamically-generated product pages which are largely invisible to search engines.

"It is important to remember that search engines rank pages, not sites. It is therefore crucial that each product page not only be visible to the search engines, but be individually optimized for the contents of that page. The vast majority of ecommerce software applications available today simply ignore basic search engine optimization techniques, such as custom head tags, H1 tags, image alt attributes, and allow for no or limited unique product page optimization. Additionally, advanced techniques such as RSS feeds and content syndication are noticeably absent in most off the shelf systems," continued Foster.

PrimeCart comes with a free trial and a "no hassle, money back guarantee". Imagine the face of the conductor with a broken baton and all the worst fears and dreams in world coming true accompanied with a cacophony in the name of symphony. Music?

Precisely the reason why a website on the Internet should be optimized.
Aditya Infotech explains the term Search Engine Optimization as a continuous and ongoing process where the architecture of the website and the website itself remains updated with the objective to return a particular search term on a particular search engine with the correct search result. Here the content and structure of the website's copy and page layout, the meta-tags, and the submission process make sure the required takes place. No horror stories of searching a mole and finding a mouse.
Precisely the reason why websites are entrusted to Search Engine Optimizers.

Search Engine Optimization or SEO simply makes sure a website appears at the choicest position on the search of a particular term. Search Engines generate more than eighty seven percent of traffic on the Internet thus reaching targeted audiences for particular purposes for the communication of messages. Search Engine Optimizers have made and continue to make successes of marketing campaigns not only on the internet but offline as well.

A wise investment in Search Engines and Search Engine Optimization for the benefit of cash registers makes way to profitable futures for websites. A website on the Internet from conception to maturity, from Domain Registration to Search Engine Submission, and from Website Hosting To Search Engine Optimization, from the beginning with no end calls for an expert Search Engine Optimizer.

Consider not having to consider complicated procedures and terminology like, Keyword Research, Initial Search Engine Optimization report, Competition Analysis report, Pre-Optimization Ranking Report, Creation Of Title Tags based on initial keyword research, Description Tags, Keyword Tags, Alt Tags, Comment Tags, H1 – H2 Tags, Search Engine Submissions To More Than 9000 Search Engines And Directories, Free One way links, Creation Of Themed Link Pages, Manual Link Requests To Related Websites, Proper Use of Robots.txt file, W3c Validations for Home page, Image Optimization, On page Optimization, Key Phrases Optimization, Website Traffic Analysis, Competent Customer Support.

Consider all these taken care of by the Search Engine Optimizer. Your Personal ChecklistWhen I sit down with new clients and discuss the status of their new or existing site they are often shocked when I am forced to inform them that their site is not search engine friendly. Encountered with a blank but slightly shaken look I then explain that this means their site has a particular problem that is hindering search engine rankings. Often this is represented by an inflexible design, overuse of advanced web technologies, or simply a weak navigation scheme. As a result, if they were to continue with the site as it stands they are unlikely to attain competitive search engine rankings.

The following is checklist designed to help you gauge the search engine friendliness of your website and, if you are in the midst of planning a website this checklist will help you avoid the common pitfalls of unfriendly designs.

Technologies
First consider what technologies your website is using. There are certain technologies that require a little more hand holding than others to ensure search engine compatibility.

1. FRAMES
Lets start with this oldie. Luckily, frames are becoming a way of the past what with the use of DIV layers and the slow onset of incredibly flexible AJAX coding. The long and the short of it is that if you have Frames on your website then you are starting off at a disadvantaged position that cannot be truly search engine friendly no matter what you do. There are, however, some remedial fixes that will tie you over until you can redesign your site; yes I said redesign. The fix that I recommend is to use a noframes tag whereby you place another version of your web page inside of your framed page. This 'backup' page is what the search engines will view; here you can place relevant content and navigational elements so that the search engines can at least navigate portions of your site that are (hopefully) not framed.
More info on the no frames tags.

2. FLASH
There was a big brouhaha that Flash had become search engine indexable and you no longer had to worry about its search engine issues. Frankly, I have not seen the fruits of this 'improvement' to a respectable degree yet so I still consider it a kiss of death for websites designed solely in Flash. If you have a Flash-only website then I recommend one of these two options; one is to design an html version of your website and make the home page of your website html rather than Flash where you can then allow users to choose between html or Flash. The second option is to redesign the site so that it mixes both html and flash together. For example, this might mean implementing Flash amidst content on an HTML page as you would an image. I realize there are certain limitations to this option but if you can create a slick site in this manner then you will have the best of both worlds; clean search engine friendly content along with an interactive, multimedia feel. Just remember that the majority of relevant text should be in HTML format for the search engines to index.

3. Search Engine 'Unfriendly' Dynamic URL's
Unfriendly dynamic URL's are a common side effect of using a Content Management System that is not designed with search engine rankings kept in mind. Here are some examples of some unfriendly URL's:
Sample 1:
http://www.mydomain.com/myproducts.php&354=prod333&subproduct
Sample 2:
http://www.surfboardsforyou.com/boards/
filename.php?id=F98ZF4&productId=39222§ion=wicked&brand=582&template=532
These URLs are problematic because a search engine may consider these addresses too complex to spider. Why too complex? Suffice it to say that the more complex the URL, the higher the chance that a search engine robot will consider the content too dynamic to read; it changes too often to be valuable to a search engine.
The way around these types of URLs is actually not so difficult; it may only require a small investment of time and money. The 'time' will be required when researching which URL fix is right for your system. The money may be required to pay a programmer to implement and test the new URLs. Here are how the URLs might look once they are fixed to be search engine friendly:
Sample 1 Fixed:
http://www.mydomain.com/myproducts/354/prod333/subproduct/
Sample 2 Fixed:
http://www.surfboardsforyou.com/boards/wickedboards/39222/board532/
These URLs are better because they do not include the extraneous characters that are so telltale on dynamic websites. In addition, the URLs are designed to appear like normal website directories when in fact they are dynamic URLs.
Important: it is vital that you minimize the length of the URLs that you use. Search engines may stop crawling a website if there appear to be too many subdirectories. The samples above show fixed URLs that have about as many subdirectories as I would allow

(4).Design
This section focuses on the overall layout and usability of your designs from the perspective of a search engine robot. Search engine friendly design is occasionally quite complex so I have provided a list of the most common issues to consider.

1. Menus
Are the menus on your website spiderable? If not you may be hiding major areas of your website from search engine spiders and missing out on additional search engine rankings.

The fact is there are very few menus out there that a search engine will have a problem following, but there are definitely some worth avoiding. For instance do not use a JavaScript Jump Menu (example) as the core mode of navigation of your website; search engines cannot index this type of menu. Also be careful of Flash menus, they look slick but they will impede the progress of a search engine spider especially if they are the only means of navigation within your site.

General Menu Rules
The ideal menu would be text based and each text link would include the keywords you are targeting on the destination page. Setting up a menu with this much forethought requires that you determine the layout and content for your site before web design begins. Once you have a clear picture of the content for each page you can then research the keywords that are best to target per webpage. This essential keyword research can be done in house easily enough using systems-like keyword research tools that provide you with a glimpse into how your customers think by showing how many searches there are per month (or year) for a particular term.
Remember, almost every page within your site has a very real opportunity to gain a top ranking; all you need to do is ensure that the design, content and site structure is optimized. Ensuring that the menu is carefully thought out and designed is a crucial step for top rankings.
Finally, if you are at all uncertain whether your menu is search engine friendly then be certain to back it up with a text menu in the footer of your page using the same keyword targeting principles noted above.
Tech Advice: a simple text menu may be less than desirable for you; in this case I recommend DHTML menus. These menus use text but in a manner that is quite appealing and very search engine friendly.

2. Sitemaps
Sitemaps can dramatically help the visibility of your website by allowing search engine spiders easy access to all of the pages in your site. Place a link to the sitemap on every page within your site to ensure easy access no matter where a search engine or user enters your site.

Sitemap Tips
Just having a sitemap will help but how you build your sitemap will also play a role in how well the search engines catalogue it. For example, if you have a twenty-page website it would be ideal to create a sitemap where each page is represented by a title along with a short description. Ultimately, the page may be a bit long but it will have content that the search engines like to index and it will boost the relevance of the linked pages because the titles will accurately represent the content. So in effect, you will now have more than just a sitemap; you will have a table of contents for your site that has the potential of getting a ranking and provides an extra boost to the ranking worthiness of each page.

Google Sitemap
Google Sitemap is an additional design element that you should consider adding. Here is an article Scott Van Achte wrote on how to implement your own Google Sitemap.

3. Layout
How you layout your page can make a significant difference in how well your site ranks and ultimately how search engine friendly it is.

Tips for Layout
Search engine robots read a webpage from the top of the source code (the programming that made your page - see "view source" in your browser) all the way to the bottom. As a result, it is important to ensure that both of the following elements are found as close to the beginning of code as possible:
A) A short sentence introducing the topic using the keyword targets you have chosen for the page.
B) Your text menu and other navigational aids, or if this is not possible it would be even more beneficial to start with a paragraph or two of relevant content followed by the navigation.
By placing this information near to the top of the page, you will promptly present the search engine robot with relevant text that backs up the page title and backlinks. You will also provide an immediate sitemap of sorts for the search engine to spider, which includes keywords relevant to each page.

4. Splash Pages - ACK!
With the odd exception Splash Pages are a kiss of death for a website because the home page (the first page seen when someone visits your domain), your most important page, is often converted into nothing but an excess entry point with little or no relevant content on it. Aside from reducing your chances for ranking, you are also making your visitors take another step to get to content or sales material in your site. Any additional steps you add will lessen the likelihood of a successful sale.
Please Let Me Change Your Mind

If you think you need to use a splash page then you need to talk to someone who will change your mind. No, honestly, give me a call if you want because there is nothing more painful to a SEO or search engine friendly web designer to see a Splash Page in use. If, in the unlikely scenario your splash page is required, there are ways to make it slightly more search engine friendly.

1. Add a highly relevant and well-worded paragraph to the page so that the search engines have something to index that shows them they are in the right place.
2. Either provide a link to your sitemap or implement a text menu in the footer of the page so the search engines can access the internal workings of your website without having to take an extra step.

In Summary
creating a search engine friendly website requires a basic to advanced understanding of how a search engine works, depending on the complexity of the planned website. Complexity aside, the notes above provide a good basis for you to evaluate the friendliness of your website and make changes where necessary.Chandruhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17148967918500613826noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-22045594.post-1157629918771871552006-09-07T17:19:00.000+05:302006-09-07T17:21:59.260+05:30Google Teaching Search Engine Optimization CoursesGoogle Teaching Search Engine Optimization Courses

Google is continuing to expand its reach out to webmasters and lend a bit more transparency to world of SEO with a new agenda in teaching SEO to publishers at universities. At first, I thought I was getting requests from former black-hat SEO (define) clients whose sites were getting their just desserts: exploit the search engines, get penalized.

After a few consultations, I realized a number of sites didn't even have search engine spam penalties. What I discovered were people with unrealistic expectations about search engine visibility; limited knowledge about the technical aspects of Web sites; and unclear concepts about how search engines work.

Search Engine Spider vs. Search Engine Index

I always have great fun at SES, not only as a speaker but also as an attendee. I often sit in the back of the room and listen to attendees' questions. They reveal how little or how much people know about the entire optimization process. If I hear the same question in multiple sessions, I know I should explain the concepts more clearly in forthcoming presentations.

The biggest misconception at this year's conference was the difference between the spidering and indexing processes. The index is a subset of the spider. Search engines access Web content through the spidering process. Then, they filter out duplicates and other bad content and create the index.

Maybe the reason SEO professionals, Web site owners, marketing professionals, and usability experts don't understand this concept is because there's so much emphasis on keywords. Before you build a Web site, you should perform keyword research. Keyword research is necessary to understand how users categorize and describe your products and services before you place site navigation and other sense-of-place labels on an advanced prototype. You can think keyword, keyword, keyword until you're blue in the face. Search engines won't see your Web pages' keywords unless you provide access to those keywords.

A Web site can be spidered and not included in a search engine index.

Instead of keywords, keywords, keywords, think access, access, access. Many Web site owners think their sites have been banned in the search engines when in reality they suddenly provided search engines with limited or no access to their sites' content.

Spam Penalty or Not?

Before assuming a site has been banned from or penalized by a search engine, look for technical reasons the site may not be included in the index.
Look at the robots exclusion protocol, both the text file (if used) and the robots exclusion meta tags. Was your site's content management system recently upgraded? Were the 301 redirects (define) properly implemented? Is your server delivering the appropriate HTTP status codes?

The 301 redirect is like a change-of-address card for a URL. It means a Web page address has permanently moved to a new address. If search engines have limited or no access to the new URLs, Web pages won't appear in search results.

Additionally, if 301 redirects aren't properly implemented, they can really mess up a site's link development. I recently had to go through a painstaking explanation (and some troubleshooting) of improperly formatted 301s for a client who assumed his site was banned by Google.

Ouch! Bad flashback. Excuse me for a moment while I take an aspirin.

Another common technical issue is a change in a page's linkage properties. Link farms are a form of search engine spam. A Web site owner has no control over how other sites link to his site, but he has complete control over how he links to other sites. Therefore, search engines rarely penalize a site for how other sites link to yours, with the exception of link farms. Additionally, by modifying all outbound links on a page to have a nofollow attribute, site owners change the hub or authority score of that page. That can have a negative impact on search engine visibility.

After all technical reasons for not being spidered or indexed are addressed, there's the genuine possibility a site is penalized or banned. Helping sites get unbanned is no fun task. It often takes months to undue all the damage created by black-hat SEO professionals.

I actually encountered a Web site banned for its affiliates' actions. The corporate site wasn't actually part of the link farm, but many of its affiliate sites participated in link farms to achieve instant link popularity. As a result, Google banned both the affiliate sites and the corporate site. Get a good handle on your affiliate SEO plan before embarking on an SEO campaign.

Ouch! Another bad flashback. Excuse me again while I take another aspirin.

Conclusion

First, look for technical reasons why Web pages aren't being spidered and indexed. Then, if the site has no technical issues, try to find items on a site that may violate the terms and conditions set forth by the commercial Web search engines. Sometimes, the simplest solution is turning to the black-hat SEO firm you hired and saying, "You're fired!"

All too often, the main reason people believe their sites have been banned or penalized is unrealistic expectations. All search engine positioning fluctuates. It doesn't matter whether pages of your site had top-10 positions for the past five years. No site is entitled to top search engine positions all the time.
New sites are added to the Web every day. Sometimes, these sites have better content and better site usability than your site. Search engine spam pages slip through the cracks, too. And search engines certainly don't always have effective algorithms. Keyword research, Web site development, usability, and search optimization are ongoing processes. By staying on top of all these processes, your site should receive consistent, qualified traffic over time from search engines and other reputable resources.Chandruhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17148967918500613826noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-22045594.post-1156135676927755482006-08-21T10:13:00.000+05:302006-08-21T10:17:57.183+05:30Search Engine Optimization: Your Key to Online SuccessSearch engine optimization is all about taking your site to the top of search engine rankings. His post also noted that Google has been testing a new layout for the video section. "We sure don't see this kind of product attention showered on Froogle," he wrote.

Traffic on Google's video site was eclipsed in February 2006 by YouTube, a California-based startup. In July, about 30.5 million people visited YouTube, compared with 9.3 million to Google Video and 5.3 million to Yahoo Inc.'s Yahoo Video, according to data from Nielsen/NetRatings.

Now, Google, Yahoo and several television networks are scouting ways to convert the viral popularity of online videos into revenue.

For Google, giving the video section home-page play could be a start.

"You can't underestimate the power of distribution on that front page," Bill Tancer, the general manager of global research for Hitwise, an Internet research group.

Google Video snagged twice its usual share of clicks on Google properties the day of the switch, while Froogle's share declined, according to data from Hitwise. Before the switch, about half of Google Video's traffic came from the Google home page; the day of the switch, that amount jumped to 70 percent.

Swapping the link was "not about driving traffic in any particular place," claimed Marissa Mayer, Google's vice president of search products and user experience.

She said videos are like news stories in that users tend to browse for new and interesting content, rather than coming to the site with a specific query. Grouping video with other "destination" areas of the site such as news and maps made philosophical sense, she said.

Froogle, which is still in beta testing, had about 6.6 million unique visitors in July. The site badly lagged Shopzilla.com, the top shopping search engine, which racked up 17.2 million visitors, and Yahoo's shopping network, which had about 11.1 million, according to data from Nielsen/NetRatings.

But Froogle's lackluster performance had no effect on the decision, Mayer said. Neither did the company's interest in turning video into a revenue stream, though she did concede that more traffic flowing to the video section would make it easier for Google to profit, eventually.

That argument didn't quite ring true for search industry watcher John Battelle.

"The fact is that YouTube is hot, video is hot, and there's a lot of money projected to be shifted from video advertising on TV to video advertising on the Web," said Battelle, a founding editor of Wired magazine and author of "The Search: How Google and Its Rivals Rewrote the Rules of Business and Transformed Our Culture."

"It would be irresponsible if Google didn't set itself up to take advantage of that, and that's what they've done," he said.

Battelle said the change will help Google position itself as a logical partner for content companies - a strategy that gained momentum last week with key advertising deals with News Corp. and Viacom Inc.Chandruhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17148967918500613826noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-22045594.post-1155729432716120302006-08-16T17:20:00.000+05:302006-08-16T17:27:28.313+05:30Outsource SEO vs In-house SEOOutsource SEO vs In-house SEO

SEO is becoming increasingly important to all who look to do business and use the Internet as a marketing tool. It is the path in which your market finds your offering. It has become almost a necessity for businesses to incorporate SEO in to their marketing plan. Many companies struggle with the decision on whether to hire a firm or conduct their SEO in-house. Unfortunately many companies lack the knowledge about SEO and assume it will be cheaper for them in the long run to hire someone "in-house".

For some companies this may be efficient while others the overlooking the hiring of a professional firm to SEO can be costly. It is as critical to your business' health as if you were to feel that you could heal a fatal disease yourself because you have access to the Internet and books instead of going to a highly trained physician. Now you laugh and say that would be absurd, but is the growth of your company worth the risk.

Knowledge Versus Cost Versus Time = Your Success

SEO is an ever changing business. Search engines change their algorithm frequently and new rules are put into place. One has to have the resources to find this information and understand how to implement the changes. An SEO firm is more likely to be aware of changes to search engine optimization protocols than an in-house individual. Many in-house individuals will focus on developing and implementing your SEO strategies but typically remain in the dark about what goes on outside your organization.

Outsourced SEO professionals must perform these same functions while constantly studying the industry, staying current with changing trends and familiarizing themselves with the latest SEO techniques. It is a part of their day to day business and necessary if they intend to compete in the marketplace and wish to survive.

What about cost? Surely the cost of hiring an individual is substantially less than the cost of hiring a company, right? This is a common misconception. Let's look at it this way. You hire an E-Commerce Marketing Manager whose job is to develop and implements the strategic online marketing plan for an organization. Staying abreast of changes in the online marketing environment to best serve the objectives of the organization and adjusts plans accordingly. They may even be responsible for overseeing other aspects of the website such as the advertising and content components.

In most cases the individual will be wearing many hats spreading them thin. His or her base salary according to Salary.com on average would be $85,703. That is $7141.92 a month and roughly $42 an hour. This is for one individual with hopes that they bear positive results. Let's say they do not. It will take 3 to 6 months to start to truly see if the individual is an asset or not. That is $21,425.76 if you decide to let the individual go in just the third month. Not to include cost of taxes and benefits. And if successful, your company just paid $85,703 per year for SEO.

The average SEO firm charges anywhere from $5500 to $35000 to perform the same task with a staff of highly trained professionals in the area of link building, writing, optimizing, web development etc. Even on the high end you are getting a staff for the entire year for around what it cost you to hire an individual in-house for a quarter. And if it does not bear positive results and you decide to terminate the relationship you will only have lost less than $10,000 if prorated based on the $35000. in most cases you can even get some of that back. This logistically saves you time and money.

Would you agree that having one individual do the job of five is rarely a good idea? Would you feel it cost effective?

Time is another concern with in-house SEO. Will one individual be able to optimize multiple pages, write content, tags, build links, run reports and perform other SEO tasks in a timely fashion? One person can only do so much. Would you agree that time is money? Most SEO firms can do in a matter of days what might take an individual weeks to do. Many companies who use in-house SEO personnel spend more than necessary to get the same amount of work done in a longer amount of time. Once again you have one individual doing many task versus many individuals doing one task effectively.

In any case, is outsourcing the right move for you or your company? Whether you choose to outsource or not, here are a few things to keep in mind:

Do your research by performing a simple cost/benefit analysis on what outsourcing versus in-house SEO will cost. It cost twice as much when you do it wrong the first time.

Results are all that matters. Top rankings for phrases no one is searching for means little, and shouldn't be used as a guage of someone's abilities. Ensure they can provide you with keywords that work for your business as well as a diverse plan of action. What do others say about the company or individual? Ask for references and check them. But even if they have limited or no reference don't panic. They still may know what they are doing. Just test them on a small project and see if they bear results for you. This is a true way to measure if they work for you. There are many variables you may not have privilege to in a reference such as their personal relationship or if they were a part of a team that was successful but they contributed little.

Remember, SEO is important to your business growth and time is money one way or another. Do the math and ask yourself what makes sense for you.Chandruhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17148967918500613826noreply@blogger.com0
